    i-STAT TBI Plasma Cartridge

Plasma-based traumatic brain injury biomarker assessment for clinical laboratory settings

    Product overview

The i-STAT TBI Plasma cartridge measures biomarkers associated with brain injury in plasma samples to help determine the need for a CT scan of the head. Like the whole blood TBI cartridge, it quantifies GFAP and UCH-L1, but uses plasma prepared from EDTA anticoagulated specimens rather than whole blood. Results are available in 15 minutes.

    Clinical applications

Used in the evaluation of patients 18 years of age or older presenting with suspected mild traumatic brain injury (Glasgow Coma Scale 13-15) within 12 hours of injury. Important distinction: the TBI Plasma test is intended for clinical laboratory settings only - it is not intended for point-of-care use. A 'not elevated' interpretation is associated with the absence of acute traumatic intracranial lesions on head CT.

What does the i-STAT TBI Plasma Cartridge measure?

    Category: Traumatic Brain Injury

    • GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein)
    • UCH-L1 (ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal esterase L1)

    Frequently Asked Questions

The TBI cartridge uses whole blood and is cleared for point-of-care use. The TBI Plasma cartridge uses plasma and is intended for clinical laboratory settings only. The TBI cartridge has a 24-hour injury window, while the TBI Plasma cartridge has a 12-hour injury window.

Like the whole blood TBI cartridge, the TBI Plasma cartridge is only compatible with the i-STAT Alinity instrument.

Why would I choose plasma over whole blood?

The plasma cartridge may be preferred in clinical laboratory workflows where samples are already being centrifuged for other tests. It integrates into existing lab sample processing pipelines.
