ABOUT THIS PAGE

If you are here, something is going on with your i-STAT 1.

Maybe you inherited a handheld from another department and there is no system manual to go with it. Maybe you are getting repeated cartridge error codes and cannot figure out whether it is a cartridge problem, a pin conditioning issue, or a failing analyzer. Maybe the barcode scanner stopped working, the battery is not holding a charge, or the Electronic Simulator is returning unexpected failure codes. Maybe you manage a fleet of i-STAT handhelds across multiple departments and your support costs keep climbing. Or maybe you need additional units and do not want to pay full price for new ones.

Block Scientific is an independent laboratory equipment company with 40+ years of experience. We are not Abbott and we are not affiliated with them. What we are is a company that knows point-of-care testing platforms, with a Centers of Excellence designation for the i-STAT 1 and nationwide support coverage.

We can help you with documentation, parts, service, troubleshooting, refurbished handhelds, trade-ins, and cartridge sourcing. Tell us what you need and we will get back to you within one business day.

DOCUMENTATION

i-STAT 1 Manual and Documentation Help

The i-STAT 1 comes with a System Manual that covers analyzer theory, cartridge procedures, quality control protocols, Electronic Simulator testing, troubleshooting, and hardware maintenance. There is also a User Guide (quick reference format), a Technical Bulletin with detailed error code explanations, and Cartridge and Test Information (CTI) sheets for each cartridge type. Abbott provides some training resources through their support portal as well.

These documents get separated from the handhelds more often than you would expect, especially in environments where i-STAT units move between departments, get loaned to satellite locations, or change hands during staff transitions. If you need help locating a specific i-STAT 1 document, tell us which one using the form below. We will do our best to connect you with available resources or point you in the right direction.

PARTS

i-STAT 1 Parts Inquiries

The i-STAT 1 is a handheld device, so the parts profile is different from a benchtop analyzer. Common replacement needs include rechargeable batteries, downloader/recharger cradles, portable printers, Electronic Simulators, ceramic conditioning cartridges (used to maintain the contact pins in the cartridge port), and barcode scanner assemblies. The contact pins themselves wear over time with heavy use, and pin conditioning is a routine maintenance step that many operators overlook until cartridge errors start appearing.

Block Scientific can help you identify the right component for your i-STAT 1 and, in some cases, source it for you. Our primary focus is service, refurbishment, and full system support rather than individual part-by-part sales, but we are happy to look into availability and point you in the right direction.

If you are managing multiple handhelds and seeing recurring issues, we can also talk through whether a fleet evaluation or replacement strategy makes more sense.

SERVICE

i-STAT 1 Service and Preventive Maintenance

The i-STAT 1 requires minimal daily maintenance compared to benchtop analyzers. The primary daily task is running the Electronic Simulator, either the internal simulator or an external unit, to verify that the analyzer's measurement systems are functioning correctly. Pin conditioning with the ceramic conditioning cartridge should be performed on a regular schedule, especially on high-use units, to keep cartridge contact surfaces clean and responsive. Battery management, software updates, and downloader synchronization round out the routine maintenance picture.

Block Scientific offers four service plan tiers to match different usage patterns.

TROUBLESHOOTING

i-STAT 1 Troubleshooting Help

The i-STAT 1 uses a numeric error code system tied to failed quality checks during the cartridge test cycle. Common error categories include cartridge fill errors (underfilled, overfilled, or sample past the fill mark), motor errors (motor moved too long or motor stalled), potentiometric and amperometric channel out-of-limits, thermal probe failures, bubble detection near sensors, and cartridge-locked conditions caused by dead batteries or mechanical issues. Coagulation cartridge errors (codes 165 through 175) have their own set of causes. Immuno cartridge errors are specific to the i-STAT 1 and do not appear on the older Portable Clinical Analyzer.

Block Scientific cannot provide step-by-step repair procedures on this page for liability reasons, but our support team can talk through your symptoms and help you determine whether the issue is cartridge-related, pin-related, battery-related, or requires a hardware repair. If your i-STAT 1 is producing repeated errors and the Electronic Simulator is passing, that often points to a different root cause than if the simulator itself is failing. Use the form below and describe what you are seeing.

If your instrument is down right now and patient testing is affected, let us know in the form and mark the urgency. Downed instruments get priority.

REPLACEMENT

i-STAT 1 Refurbished Replacement Systems

When a handheld starts producing unreliable results, when repair costs approach the price of a replacement, or when you need additional units for a new department or satellite location, a refurbished i-STAT 1 from Block Scientific is worth considering. Every refurbished unit goes through our Centers of Excellence inspection process, including cartridge port testing, pin conditioning verification, display and scanner checks, battery and charging system validation, and full Electronic Simulator pass confirmation.

The i-STAT 1 is one of the most widely deployed point-of-care testing platforms in the world, with over 50,000 handhelds in use across more than 1,800 hospitals. Replacing an i-STAT 1 with another i-STAT 1 means your staff does not need retraining, your cartridge inventory stays the same, and your data management integration (Info HQ, AEGIS, or LIS connectivity) remains intact. Block Scientific also offers trade-in credit toward replacement handhelds.

Frequently Asked Questions

We can help you locate available documentation for the i-STAT 1, including the System Manual, User Guide, Technical Bulletin, and Cartridge and Test Information sheets. Tell us which document you need using the form above and we will do our best to connect you with available resources. We cannot guarantee access to every document, as some are proprietary to Abbott, but we will point you in the right direction.

No. Block Scientific is an independent laboratory equipment company. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or authorized by Abbott. We are experienced with the i-STAT platform and have a Centers of Excellence designation for the i-STAT 1, but we operate independently. Many facilities choose independent service providers for cost savings, scheduling flexibility, and the ability to manage multiple analyzer brands through a single partner.

Yes. Repeated cartridge errors on the i-STAT 1 can stem from several causes: worn contact pins that need conditioning, cartridge storage or handling issues, expired cartridge lots, fill technique problems, or a hardware issue with the analyzer itself. Our support team can walk through what you are seeing, help narrow the root cause, and recommend whether you need pin conditioning, a different cartridge lot, or a repair. Use the form above and describe the error codes you are getting.

Pricing depends on the specific model variant, included accessories (printer, downloader, simulator), and warranty term. Contact us using the form above and we will provide a quote based on current inventory and your requirements. Refurbished handhelds from Block Scientific go through our Centers of Excellence inspection process and come with a warranty.

Yes. Block Scientific purchases used i-STAT 1 handhelds at fair market value, whether fully functional or not. Working units go back into service. Non-functional units provide components for the broader i-STAT installed base. Trade-in credit can be applied toward replacement handhelds. Contact us for a valuation.

Our focus is on service, refurbishment, and full system support rather than individual part-by-part fulfillment. That said, we can help you identify the correct component for your i-STAT 1 and check availability for items like rechargeable batteries, downloader/recharger cradles, printers, Electronic Simulators, and ceramic conditioning cartridges. If a part is available, we will let you know. If the situation calls for a broader fleet evaluation, we will recommend that instead.

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW

About the Abbott i-STAT 1 Handheld Blood Analyzer

The i-STAT 1 is a handheld, portable blood analyzer designed for point-of-care testing in hospitals, emergency departments, operating rooms, ICUs, clinics, and field settings. It uses single-use test cartridges containing chemically sensitive biosensors on silicon chips to deliver lab-quality results from just two to three drops of whole blood in approximately two minutes. The test menu covers blood gases, electrolytes, chemistries (BUN, creatinine, glucose), coagulation (ACT, PT/INR), hematology (hematocrit), and cardiac markers (troponin I, BNP). Each cartridge runs its own preset quality control diagnostics before testing begins.

The handheld measures 23.48 cm long, 7.68 cm wide, and 7.24 cm deep, weighing about 650 grams with the rechargeable battery. It runs on either two 9-volt lithium disposable batteries or a rechargeable battery pack, with factory-calibrated electronic, mechanical, thermal, and pressure systems. The integrated barcode scanner reads patient IDs, operator IDs, and cartridge lot information. Connectivity options include the downloader/recharger cradle, a portable printer, and wireless data transmission to Abbott Info HQ, AEGIS, or directly to Laboratory Information Systems and Electronic Medical Records.

The i-STAT platform traces its origins to i-STAT Corporation, which pioneered the concept of handheld blood analysis with biosensor cartridge technology in the late 1980s. The original i-STAT Portable Clinical Analyzer established the platform. Abbott acquired i-STAT Corporation in 2003 and introduced the i-STAT 1 with a color display, enhanced processing, wireless connectivity, and an immuno-ready cartridge port for cardiac marker testing. The platform has grown to over 50,000 handhelds deployed in more than 1,800 hospitals worldwide, with over 35 million test cartridges produced annually.

The i-STAT 1's installed base remains one of the largest in point-of-care diagnostics. Its simplicity, portability, and broad test menu keep demand steady for documentation, replacement parts, batteries, simulators, and refurbished units. Cartridge error code troubleshooting, pin conditioning, and battery management are the most common support needs reported by facilities running this platform.
