ABOUT THIS PAGE
If you are here, something is going on with your Piccolo Xpress.
Maybe the Operator's Manual is missing and nobody in the office knows how to run the quality control procedure. Maybe you are getting a Cuvette Sensor Error (4210) and suspect the optical system needs cleaning but are not sure where to start. Maybe the barcode reader is not recognizing discs and you are seeing Barcode Format Error codes. Maybe a software update changed something and now perfectly good discs are being rejected with a Disc Date Illegal message. Maybe your reagent disc supply chain is unreliable and you are running low. Or maybe you are comparing whether it makes more sense to repair your current analyzer or replace it with a refurbished unit.
Block Scientific is an independent laboratory equipment company with 40+ years of experience. We are not Abaxis or Abbott and we are not affiliated with them. What we are is a company that knows point-of-care chemistry platforms, with a Centers of Excellence designation for the Piccolo Xpress and nationwide support coverage.
We can help you with documentation, parts, service plans, troubleshooting, refurbished analyzers, trade-ins, and reagent disc sourcing. Tell us what you need and we will get back to you within one business day.
DOCUMENTATION
Piccolo Xpress Manual and Documentation Help
The Piccolo Xpress comes with an Operator's Manual covering system description, installation, testing and results, error messages, calibration and quality control, maintenance, connectivity, and troubleshooting. There is also a Quick Reference Guide for daily operation and Cartridge/Test Information sheets for each reagent disc panel. Abbott Point of Care (which distributes the Piccolo Xpress in the US) provides additional support documentation and training resources.
These documents go missing in busy clinic environments, especially when analyzers move between offices, get handed down from one practice to another, or survive a renovation. If you need help locating a specific Piccolo Xpress document, tell us which one using the form below. We will do our best to connect you with available resources or point you in the right direction.
PARTS
Piccolo Xpress Parts Inquiries
The Piccolo Xpress is a compact benchtop system (about the size of a shoebox, weighing 11.2 pounds) with a relatively simple hardware profile. Common replacement needs include the internal barcode reader (which scans the disc for calibration data, lot number, and expiration date), the optical sensor system (nine-wavelength photometer that monitors all reagent reactions simultaneously), the thermal printer mechanism and adhesive paper rolls, the cooling fan, and the power supply. Software updates are also a maintenance item, as outdated firmware can cause disc compatibility errors.
Block Scientific can help you identify the right component for your Piccolo Xpress and, in some cases, source it for you. Our primary focus is service, refurbishment, and full system support rather than individual part-by-part sales, but we are happy to look into availability.
If the repair turns out to be more involved than a single component, we can talk through whether a service visit or a replacement analyzer makes more sense.
SERVICE
Piccolo Xpress Service and Preventive Maintenance
The Piccolo Xpress requires minimal routine maintenance. Weekly tasks include cleaning the external case and display with a soft cloth and mild detergent. The barcode reader lens and LED should be cleaned periodically with a cotton-tipped applicator and isopropyl alcohol or distilled water, especially if disc read errors are occurring. Quality control should be run at least every 30 days or with each new lot number of reagent disc panels, whichever comes first. Software updates should be applied as they become available to prevent disc compatibility issues.
Block Scientific offers four service plan tiers:

Prepared
Covers low-use clinics with one annual PM, unlimited tech support, parts, labor, and travel.
Protected
Adds one-hour callback, 48-hour onsite response, and two repair calls per year.
Classic
Offers unlimited repair calls.
Proactive
Delivers everything in Classic plus 24-hour onsite response.
All plans are provided nationwide and typically come in at up to 30% less than OEM pricing.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Piccolo Xpress Troubleshooting Help
The Piccolo Xpress displays error codes when problems occur during the testing process. Common errors include Code 13 (expired reagent disc detected by the built-in sensor), Error 4056 (Disc Date Illegal, often caused by outdated analyzer software), Error 410D (Barcode Format Error, typically from a dirty or damaged barcode reader lens), Error 4210 (Cuvette Sensor Error, usually related to a dirty optical sensor), Error 403D (Sample Mix Error, sample did not mix with reagents sufficiently), and Error 403E (Dilution Error, insufficient rotor reagents). Suppressed results indicated by "~~~" symbols mean the analyzer could not produce accurate results for a specific analyte and chose to suppress rather than report potentially inaccurate values.
Block Scientific cannot provide step-by-step repair procedures on this page for liability reasons, but our support team can talk through your error codes and symptoms, help determine whether the issue is disc-related, software-related, or hardware-related, and recommend next steps.
If your Piccolo Xpress is currently out of service, note that in the form below and we will prioritize your request.
REPLACEMENT
Piccolo Xpress Refurbished Replacement Systems
When the optical system degrades, when the barcode reader fails, or when you need an additional analyzer for a new office location, a refurbished Piccolo Xpress from Block Scientific is worth considering. Every refurbished unit goes through our Centers of Excellence inspection process, including optical system verification, barcode reader testing, thermal printer calibration, fan operation checks, and full reagent disc test runs.
Replacing a Piccolo Xpress with another Piccolo Xpress means your staff does not need retraining, your reagent disc inventory stays the same, and your EMR/LIS connectivity setup carries over. Block Scientific also offers financing options and trade-in credit toward replacements.

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW
About the Abaxis Piccolo Xpress Chemistry Analyzer
The Piccolo Xpress is a compact, portable clinical chemistry analyzer designed for point-of-care testing in physician offices, urgent care clinics, oncology practices, pediatric offices, small hospital laboratories, and other outpatient settings. It weighs 11.2 pounds, measures 32.4 cm by 15.2 cm by 20.3 cm (about the size of a shoebox), and runs on either AC power or a 15V DC battery for portable use. The system uses patented single-use reagent discs, 8 cm in diameter and 2 cm thick, that contain all the liquid diluent and dry reagents needed to perform a complete multi-test chemistry panel from just 100 microliters (3 to 4 drops) of whole blood, serum, or plasma.
The analyzer uses centrifugal and capillary forces to mix the sample with reagents inside the disc, then monitors all reactions simultaneously using a nine-wavelength photometer. Results are available in approximately 12 minutes. Each disc is barcoded for automatic self-calibration, and the onboard intelligent Quality Control (iQC) system performs continuous quality checks during every run, eliminating the need for separate daily QC testing.
The menu includes 31 blood chemistry tests organized into 16 reagent disc panels, 11 of which are CLIA-waived. Tests cover liver function, kidney function, metabolic panels, lipids, electrolytes, and specialty analytes.
The Piccolo Xpress was developed by Abaxis, Inc., a company based in Union City, California, that pioneered centrifugal reagent disc technology for point-of-care clinical chemistry. Abaxis also produces the VetScan line for veterinary diagnostics using the same core technology. Abbott Point of Care is now the exclusive US distributor for the Piccolo Xpress medical platform. The system has a full-color touchscreen, stores up to 5,000 patient records onboard, and offers five USB ports for bidirectional connectivity to printers, keyboards, barcode scanners, computers, and EMR/LIS systems. Data formats include ASCII, ASTM, HL7, and XML.
The Piccolo Xpress's installed base is large across outpatient and small hospital settings. Its simplicity, CLIA-waived menu, and minimal training requirements make it a popular choice for practices that need onsite chemistry without the complexity of a full laboratory setup. Common support needs include reagent disc sourcing, barcode reader and optical sensor maintenance, software updates to prevent disc compatibility errors, and replacement units for growing practices.
