Microorganisms reproduce and double approximately every 15-20 minutes. This quick ability to multiply is it is necessary to constantly clean and disinfect the places where germs can live and come in contact with people. When used as directed, a disinfectant can kill of the germs that are specified on its label.
Disinfectants should be used on clinical contact surfaces such as light handles, switches, reusable containers of dental materials, countertops, and telephone handles. These surfaces directly come into contact with contaminated devices, instruments, hands, or gloves.
When buying disinfectants, the first thing to look for on the product label is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration number. If it for a hospital, check for “Hospital Disinfectant” on the label. Check for compatibility with surfaces, conditions of use and cleaning as well as disinfecting properties. It is also important that the product comes with clear, easy-to-follow instructions. An ideal nonporous surface disinfectant would have little or no potential for human allergic response, be easy to use and a reasonable use life and shelf life. A reasonable contact time, i.e., 10 minutes or less is desirable.
Using disinfectants correctly is critical to success. Things to note:
- All multi-clean disinfectants should stay in contact with the nonporous surface for a minimum of 10 minutes – the contact would be specified on the label
- To prevent cross contamination, all concentrated detergents should be made fresh every day or when the cleaning solution is seen to be dirty
- A disinfectant should never be mixed with another chemical unless specified on the label
- The right concentration is important – do not add any more or any less than instructed on the label
